Using beauty and community to liberate and heal.
In 2014, founder Heather Packer took her decade of expertise in the beauty industry and launched a vocational program for young women in Rishikesh, India - an area where traditionally, girls are married at a young age and are not free to work outside of the home.
Since 2017, Fearless Beauty has brought our mission back to the United States, where our most under-resourced communities are targeted by law enforcement and institutionalized inequality across race, gender, and class.
In 2014, Heather was considering a master’s degree in social work when she realized that she could put her nearly 20 years of experience as a stylist and educator into action for social change. “My vision was to launch a program that inspires other hairdressers across the country to volunteer and teach,” she said. “The skills hairstylists use every day are universal. People around the world can learn this trade and become economically self-sufficient. Sharing our skills can make a difference.”
Four years later, what began as a program for teaching hair skills to young women at a vocational center in Rishikesh, India, has evolved into the only cosmetology education program for women at New York City’s Rikers Island Jail, where the injustices of our country’s criminal-legal system are impacting women more than ever before.
Now in its second year, the Fearless Beauty Rikers Island curriculum includes modules on hair cutting, hair styling, and skin care with the intention of students continuing their education and starting careers in the industry after their release. So far, one alumna who has been released has graduated from beauty school (with a scholarship from Fearless Beauty and partners) and has landed a job in the industry. Heather, her team of highly skilled beauty professionals, and the Women’s Prison Association are currently creating a community-based program for women who have already transitioned out of the system.
Take Action
New York's jails and prisons are already in the midst of a humanitarian crisis as COVID-19 spreads uncontrollably throughout the facilities, where practices like social distancing, frequent hand-washing and showers, and access to adequate health care are impossible.
Out of great care and concern for the safety of our students, their families, corrections staff, and the New York City community, we're joining the urgent call for city and state leaders to immediately release as many people as possible.
